Tongji University began in 1907 as the Tongji German Medical School, founded in Shanghai by the German physician Erich Paulun. It became a university in 1923, was renamed National Tongji University in 1927 and has kept an unusually deep German connection ever since, expressed today through joint institutes, the Chinese-German University and extensive research partnerships across Europe. On-Campus Housing Options
International students are housed in dedicated dormitories on the Siping Road and Jiading campuses, arranged and allocated through the International Students Office in Room 705 of the Zhonghe Building on the Siping Road campus. Housing, arrival and campus-service guidance is issued to admitted students by that office, which also publishes separate international student guidebooks for the Siping and Jiading campuses. Specific room rates are not published on the university's English admissions pages.
