Harbin Institute of Technology was founded in 1920 in Harbin, Heilongjiang province, originally as a Sino-Russian industrial school, and took its present name in 1938. Long nicknamed the Cradle of Engineers, it was named one of two national model universities in 1951 and was among the first six institutions chosen for key national development in 1954, reflecting its early role in importing advanced international practice into Chinese higher education.
